How It Works

Our vets perform ECGs by placing electrodes on the pet’s skin, usually on their chest and legs. Your pet may be lying down or standing and will likely not need any sedation or anesthesia. These electrodes – painless clips – record the heart’s electrical activity for anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. From there, our vets can then review the ECG tracing.

Though ECGs are generally administered when there is a concern about a potential heart condition, they may be advised in a variety of situations.

We might recommend an ECG for your pet in Putnam if:

  • Your pet’s heart rhythm is difficult to hear through a physical exam
  • We suspect your pet has an irregular heart rhythm
  • We have already conducted preliminary imaging tests and want to confirm a diagnosis
  • We are monitoring your pet’s medication that has potential cardiac side effects
  • Your pet faints or exhibits respiratory symptoms

We understand that many pet owners are concerned when they find out their pet needs an electrocardiogram. Rest assured we will explain our reasoning behind the recommendation.

An ECG can diagnose:

  • Heart murmurs
  • Heart arrhythmias
  • Heart enlargement
  • Electrical impulse abnormalities
  • Valve disease

Once we have analyzed and interpreted the results of your pet’s ECG, we will explain them to you and advise you appropriately on the next steps to take.
